Masters- and Doctoral Thesis Topics

The thesis will be supervised by Matthias Mozer and the topics listed here are centered on data-analysis with the CMS experiment. Basic knowledge in programming will be helpful in succesfully obtaining a degree.

Vector Boson Scattering

In vector boson scattering, the negative interference between the quartic vertex of electroweak theory and the the Higgs boson determines the ultimate scatterin cross section. New physisc in the Higgs sector may thus alter the cross section noticeably, even if it is out of reach of a direct measurement. We are working on this measurement in the semi-leptonic decay channel, e.g. one W decays to ℓν while the other one decays to a quark-antiquark pair.
Become an expert in modern data anaylsis methods, using multivariate techniques to distinguish signals from background. The thesis will allow you to deepen your knowledge of the C++ and python computer languages. The analysis will be performed in an international environment, so fluent English will be helpfull. Knowledge of German is not required.

Exotische Resonanzen

Discover new particles decaying to to electroweak bosons. Efforts to combine general relativity with quantum mechanics often predict such new particles. The CMS Experiment at the LHC is the ideal proving ground to find or exlcude these theories. The semi-leptonic decay channel (e.g. one W decays to ℓν while the other one decays to a quark-antiquark pair) provides the best compromise between branching ratio and background.

The analysis will be performed in an international environment, so fluent English will be helpfull. Knowledge of German is not required.

Jet-Substruktur

No semi-leptonic analysis is possible if the hadronic boson decay can't be identified with certainty. The two quarks from the boson decay will often hadronize into a single "fat" jet at the high energies of the LHC. The two-quark origin of such jets is still reconizeable in the distribution of the individual particles of the jet. Improve the current method that identify jets from hadronic boson decays and measure the boson mass, charge and polarization.
